KARACHI, March 26: The Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) have so far registered more than 9000 patients affected by diabetes and its complications.

Most patients are referred for complications like diabetic foot renal failure, hypertension, cataract, poor vision and myocardial infection.

These complications can be delayed and controlled with proper awareness. A survey has found that only one doctor out of 10 can manage diabetes properly.

It has also been noticed that teenagers and children are developing diabetes because of junk food, ice creams and chocolates.

Video and computer games keep youngsters from physical sports, hence affecting metabolism. This leads to early development of diabetes.

The JPMC has arranged a six-week training program on diabetes at its medical unit-III. The program will start from 1st April 2002. Prof Mashoor Alam Shah, in charge diabetic project, and Dr Jamal Raza, in charge paediatric project, will be the chief speakers.

Abdul Jabbar Khan, Prof Shabnam Farooqi, and Prof Tariq Aziz will discuss the complications of diabetes in their relevant fields.
