MADRID, Oct 12: World number one Roger Federer, who pulled out of last month’s Japan Open tennis tournament, will take part in next week’s Madrid Masters Series event, the organisers said on Thursday.
The 26-year-old cancelled Japan after his doctor told him he should not play in a tournament for at least 10 days to avoid serious injury after consecutive appearances in Montreal, Cincinnati, the US Open and the Davis Cup.
The Swiss tennis ace was the winner of last year’s Masters Series here.
World number two Rafael Nadal, who injured his left knee during a practice session at the beginning of last month, will also take part in the indoor tournament which gets underway on Monday.
“I have not been able to compete for a month and a half and have had to take breaks in training, I haven’t been able to do anything during two and a half weeks,” said Spanish player, who reach last year’s semi-finals. —AFP
