PESHAWAR, March 20: An accountability court here on Wednesday sentenced a former police inspector Mehmood Hussain to five-year rigorous imprisonment, and fined him Rs13.60 million.

The court, presided over by Miftauddin Khan, also ordered forfeiture of assets attributed to the accused and his relatives, with the exception of Rs1.5 million withdrawn by Mst Zubaida Saeed— Hussain’s widowed sister.

The fine might be set up against the forfeited assets as required under the section 11 of the National Accountability Bureau Ordinance, the court ruled.

The former police official was convicted under the section 10 of the NAB Ordinance, for accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income.

The same court had sentenced him to seven years with Rs15 million fine on Nov 6, 2000, but setting aside his conviction the high court remanded back his case to the trial court, seeking certain legal requirements.

The accused was arrested on June 30, 2000 and remained in custody of the NAB for 60 days.

Advocate Qazi Muhammad Anwer represented the defence and Special Prosecutor Altaf Mehmood Malik appeared for the state.

According to the NAB, the properties of the accused include: bank account of his father Sofi Noor Elahi of Rs0.6 million; his own account of Rs0.15 million; account of his sister Mst Zubeda of Rs1.9 million; four-marla plot purchased in Tauheedabad Nathiagali in 1990 and building constructed in 1993; 1/2 share in a bungalow measuring one kanal and 16 marlas in Habibullah Colony Abbotabad; nine kanals and 13-marla land in Mirpur ABbotabad; one kanal and eight-marla land in Hattar Haripur; 106 kanals and five-marla land in Saradina, Haripur; five kanals and 10-marla land at Makhnial, Haripur; 19 marla-land in Saeedabad, Haripur; and, three bungalows in Saeedabad.
