PESHAWAR, March 19: Speakers at a seminar on “Girls Education” have called for providing equal opportunities to girls so that they could effectively play their role in the development of the society.

They stressed the need for changing role of the teachers and introduction of result-oriented approach in the existing education system to overcome the contemporary world challenges.

The one-day seminar on girls education was organised by Khwendo Kor Women and Children Development Programme, a non-governmental organisation here on Tuesday. Over 150 representatives from various NGOs and donor agencies attended the seminar.

Dr Merajul Islam Zia from Sheikh Zaid Islamic Centre, University of Peshawar, said that resistance towards women education in our society had nothing to do with religion.

He said that some social constraints were the main barriers in girls education while Islam was highly supportive of female education.

Chairman Seerat Department, Dr Qibla Ayaz in his presentation on girls education from the Islamic perspective, said that only knowledge made a human being superior to other creatures. He observed that in Islam there was no discrimination among men and women in seeking education and it recommended equal opportunities to both sexes.

The seminar recommended establishment of community-based girls schools, capacity-building of village education committees and adult education for women.
