PESHAWAR, March 18: A joint Jirga of customs authorities, police officers and transporters representatives was informed on Monday that three customs officials had been arrested, and a 13-member mobile squad had been suspended from service as a result of the clash which led to the killing of two staffers of a passenger bus on Grand Trunk Road near Nowshera a couple of days back.

The jirga held under the chairmanship of Peshawar city district Nazim Azam Khan Afridi also decided to abolish all the checkposts on GT Road from Peshawar to Attock and the customs authorities were directed not to check any bus or car without prior permission, says a handout.

The jirga was further informed that all the officials involved in this bloody incident would be dealt with according to the law.

Azam Afridi while expressing grief over the loss of lives at the hands of customs staff assured the transporter community that all necessary steps would be taken for the solution of problems being faced by them.

He  said that with the elimination of checkposts,  the passengers travelling on GT Road would get relief from the mental torture they undergo at the hands of customs mobile squads.

Beside customs, other departments are also being approached for doing away with the unnecessary check points, he said, adding a decision in this regard would soon be announced.

A meeting of customs authorities, police high-ups  and transporters would be held soon after Muharram to sort out the problems confronting transporters.
