ISLAMABAD, March 17: The first annual report of National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) has been completed and would be presented to the President soon, said Chairperson, National Commission on Status of Women, Justice (Rtd) Majida Rizvi.

She said this report comprises the activities of members, progress and future planning of the Commission.

“We are also thoroughly reviewing all the discriminatory laws including Hadood Ordinance,” she said. Justice (Rtd) Majida Rizvi informed that eight committees have been constituted to improve the functioning of the Commission.

These include Administration and Coordination Committee, Crime and Violence Against Women Committee, Decision Making and Counselling Committee and Committees on Education, Health, Law, Media and on Poverty and Economy.

The newly constituted committee on “Violence Against Women” will suggest enacting of legislation where appropriate laws don’t exist and make amendments in discriminatory legislation.

The purpose of education committee is to present recommendations to cross-barriers that prevent women from playing their role and fulfilling responsibilities as citizens with equal rights at the legal, political, social and economic level.

She further informed this committee will advocate establishment of secondary schools for girls in the public and private sectors and district level and below. She said, honour killings or “Karo-Kari” would be recognized as murder, while recommendations in this regard had already been dispatched to relevant ministries.—APP
