Tokyo hopes bid will win IOC vote

TOKYO, Sept 16: Tokyo is hoping its plan to hold a compact games will make a big impression when the International Olympic Committee decides who gets to host the 2016 event.

With almost all venues within a 10-kilometre radius of the city centre, Tokyo is selling its bid as the most compact and efficient in the history of the Olympics.

The IOC said on Friday that it had received formal applications from Chicago; Baku, Azerbaijan; Doha, Qatar; Madrid, Spain; Prague, Czech Republic; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Tokyo.—AP
