Wapda sell-off to be resisted

GUJRANWALA, Aug 30: A workers’ convention of Wapda hydro electric central labour union has pledged that the privatization of the authority will strongly be resisted.

Addressing to workers on the lawns of the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) headquarters here on Thursday, union central president Abdul Latif said the Pakistan Telecommunication Limited (PTCL) and banks had been privatized at the behest of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and world powers.

He said that 33,000 employees of the PTCL and banks had been shown the door after the privatization of these institutions.

On the contrary, he said, the Wapda union had got regularized its over 22,000 contract and daily wagers.

He demanded that employees should be given the acquisition of the houses while scales of meter readers be upgraded.

Secretary-general Khurshid Ahmad Khan and regional chairman Muhammad Iqbal Dar were also present on the occasion.
