KARACHI, Aug 23: The tabulation of the results of 2,235 candidates, interviewed by a special board after written examination, is taking place under the supervision of the city police chief for 1,475 police constable vacancies in Karachi.

“The final results are being compiled following the completion of the final phase of interviews and it will take just over a week before the final list of successful candidates is issued,” said DIG Administration Khurrum Gulzar.

A special board conducted from Aug 6 to 19 the interviews of candidates who had cleared the written examination. Chaired by ADIG Welfare and Finance Syed Abbas Raza, the board comprised SP Headquarters Garden Rana Pervaiz, SP ACLU Niaz Ahmed Khosa, SP Headquarters Malir Abdul Jabbar and DSP Toufiq Ahmed, Headquarters Khawaja Ajmair Nagri.

The interviews of 466 candidates were conducted at Garden police headquarters, 356 at Malir police headquarters, 511 at the Naval police headquarters, 505 at Hasan Square headquarters and 397 at the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri headquarters. A board member said that each of the five board members separately awarded marks to each candidate, and that record is currently being compiled.

Sources in the police department told Dawn that rules pertaining to physical fitness and stamina – such as height, chest and timed sprint requirements – were relaxed for certain candidates. Interestingly enough, the conspicuous presence during the physical tests of certain unknown persons in civvies facilitated the rule relaxations, said the sources.

Other sources close to the interviewing board maintained that no such irregularity had taken place since the board members awarded separate grades which are being tabulated at the DIG Admin office.

However, remarked a senior officer associated with the recruitment process, if the results are manipulated during the tabulation, what can one do?

Following reports about conflict between the ruling partners over shares for having their favourites appointed in the police and other departments, the Sindh High Court issued a notice to the government after a petition was filed by the former city nazim, Niamatullah Khan, complaining that recruitments were being made on political grounds.

It is worth remembering that once inducted into the police department, these personnel – whether corrupt or clean – will stay in the system until retirement.
