US may allow access to Mexican trucks

WASHINGTON, Aug 18: Some Mexican trucks will be allowed to carry cargo anywhere in the US as soon as a US inspector general certifies safety and inspection plans, the administration of President George W. Bush announced.

The step towards implementing a controversial provision of the 1994 North American FTA drew instant condemnation from labour and driver-owner groups that fear the programme will erode highway safety and eliminate US jobs.—AP
