UN human rights chief due today

ISLAMABAD, March 9: United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson will arrive here on Sunday for her three-day visit to Pakistan.

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday, UN Information Centre Director Eric Falt said this would be the first visit by a UN human rights commissioner to Pakistan.

During the visit, Ms Robinson will call on President Gen Pervez Musharraf and discuss human rights issues of concern in the region.

She will meet Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar and federal minister for law, justice and human rights, Barrister Shahida Jamil.

She will also meet representatives of the civil society, including political, religious and NGO representatives.

On Wednesday, the spokesperson said, Ms Robinson would deliver an address at Punjab University.

Ms Robinson visit would conclude a two-week trip during which she visited Egypt, Bahrain, Lebanon and Afghanistan.
