ISLAMABAD, Oct 20: Gold medallist of the National Games, Mehvish Chishtie captured the women’s singles crown after downing Mariam Rahim in straight sets in the final of the 18th Federal Cup tennis championship at Islamabad Club courts Saturday.
Mehvish who won 6-2, 6-4 broke the first and third games of Mariam by hitting some good winners down the line which caught her rival on the wrong foot.
In the second set, the scores were level at 3-3 as both players held their serves. Mehvish broke Mariam’s serve in 7th game to build up a 5-3 lead by holding her own serve and went on to take the set and the match.
The men’s doubles title went to the team of Asim Shafik and Rashid Malik as they swept aside Hameedul Haq and Mushaf Zia 6-2, 6-3. Both Asim and Rashid will also feature in Sunday’s men’s singles final.
Top seed Shahzad Khan lost a set against Inam Gul before claiming the under-18 title 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours. Shahzad had recently won two ITF Pakistan World Ranking Tournaments in Lahore.
Imran Rasool, a student of Multan Public School, annexed the boys’ under-14 title by defeating S. Kumail Rizvi 2-6, 7-6(4), 6- 4. Both players put up a good fight in the decider that went on for well over two hours.
Zainab Khan clinched the girls under-12 competition as she eliminated Natasha Afridi 6-0, 6-1.
Maj. Pervez and Samin Jan Babar emerged the top veterans (50 and above) beating the pair of Jahangir Bashar and Brig. Waqar Durrani in a well-contested match 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(4).
