HOBART (Australia), Oct 20: Positions in the bottom half of the 16-team Junior World Cup were decided Saturday with three of the four matches going into extra time.
New Zealand was the only clear-cut winner, defeating France 2-0 to take ninth and France 10th place. The result improved on the pool match last Tuesday won 4-3 by New Zealand.
Malaysia wasted a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with South Africa in regulation time. After a scoreless extra 15 minutes, South Africa won the penalty shoot-out 4-2 to take 11th place and Malaysia 12th place. South Africa also won a penalty shoot-out against Scotland Wednesday and drew 1-1 with Malaysia in round two.
Ireland led Scotland 2-0 after 20 minutes but Scotland scored twice in the last eight minutes of regulation time. Scotland scored a golden goal in the last five seconds of extra time to win 3-2 and take 13th place with Ireland 14th.
The wooden spoon battle between Canada and winless Chile also went to extra time. With the crowd cheering for underdogs Chile, they scored a golden goal in extra time to take 15th place and put Canada in last place. Canada defeated New Zealand 2-1 in round two and was bitterly disappointed with the result.
