ISLAMABAD, July 2: Nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan has said that he remains under virtual house arrest since early 2004 and wishes the authorities ease the restrictions. Dr Khan told AFP by telephone that he was still suffering problems following diagnosis of cancer last year.
When asked about reports that the restrictions on him had been relaxed, he said: “There is no such information with us.”
“Obviously I would have wished that it was true but it doesn’t seem to be the case. If they tell you they have lifted the restrictions, come and meet me and see for yourself,” he said.
When asked how he was feeling, Dr Khan replied: “God is kind. I am not young, I am an old man and disease is part of old age. I miss my friends.” He said he spent most of his time “sitting home and watching TV and sleeping”.
Dr Khan’s wife also denied reports that the restrictions had been lifted. “This is disinformation, although we wish it was true,” Henny Khan said.
“Three months ago he was allowed to see five old friends as a one-time favour, this week they gave permission again for the five friends to visit him. Other than that it is the status quo,” she said.
“I am feeling much better, though I can’t say I am 100 per cent fit,” said Dr Khan, 71, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in August last year.
On Monday, two senior officials told AP that authorities had granted Dr Khan greater freedom several months ago.
“There were several restrictions on Dr Khan, many of which have been eased. He is virtually a free citizen,” said an official.
However, the second official said he was only allowed to meet associates and relatives on a list approved by officials.—AFP/AP
Ahmed Hassan adds: According to media reports, Mr Khan has talked to a few news agency reporters through unknown arrangements and put some light on his health and status.
Meanwhile, Inter-Services Public Relations Director-General Maj-Gen Waheed Arshad, when contacted, told Dawn: “There is no change in the arrangements in place for Mr Khan and he is free to meet anyone he wants to.”
