LAHORE, June 20: Rumours about the dissolution of assembly and announcement of fresh elections abound official circles in the provincial capital these days. A number of officials who talked to Dawn on the condition of anonymity during the past two days did not link the rumours to any authentic source, but insisted that these could become a reality in view of the activities in the power corridors.

According to the rumours, the assemblies could be dissolved by around middle of the next month. If this happens, a neutral caretaker government will be appointed to ensure free and fair elections. It will have none of the existing government functionaries in the centre and provinces.

“The president will seek vote for his office from the new assembly and the PPP and the PML-N will be allowed to freely contest the polls.

“There are chances that the PPP will share the next government with the ruling PML if it wins the elections. But the ruling party will face problems if the PPP makes a seat-to-seat adjustment with the PML-N.”

Another part of the rumours is that the Punjab PML, headed by Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi, will make adjustments with the other major election winning political parties. His son Moonis Elahi will contest the election, but start his political career as a provincial minister.
