KARACHI, June 20: A single bench of the High Court of Sindh comprising Justice Munib Ahmed Khan on Wednesday suspended the 10-year imprisonment handed down to an appellant by a trial court and granted him bail.

Shahid had challenged his conviction by the sessions judge (West) on May 26.

In the impugned judgment, the trial court had awarded him imprisonment for 10 years and ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs643,760 to the victim’s heirs.

The appellant was convicted in a road accident case in which a five-year-old boy was crushed to death by a passenger bus on January 1, 2003, near the Imran Hotel.

The bench suspended the sentence awarded by the trial court and granted bail to the appellant with a surety of Rs100,000 and also directed the appellant to pay the Diyat amount.

Advocate Fazal Haq represented the appellant while AAG Arshad Lodhi appeared for state.

KALASHNIKOV CASE: A single bench of the High Court of Sindh consisting of Justice Munib Ahmed Khan on Wednesday granted bail to a man booked for keeping an unlicensed kalashnikov.

The bench allowed bail to Mohammad Suleman on furnishing a surety of Rs200,000.

The applicant along with his accomplices was booked under Section 13-D of the Arms Ordinance after the Pak Colony police seized the illegal weapon from him on Sept 27, 2006. — APP
