KARACHI, June 8: The country has spent over Rs11.871 billion on import of 26,802 vehicles in complete built-up units (CBU) during the last 11 months of the current fiscal from July to May, official figures of the customs disclosed on Friday.
The customs authorities collected around Rs6.137 billion towards duty on import of these vehicles which also included luxury and high-powered cars and four-wheel drive jeeps.
All these vehicles have been imported under different schemes, such as transfer of residence (TR), personal baggage and gift schemes.
According to the figures, 18,122 were commercial vehicles which included buses, trucks, dumpers, agricultural tractors, vans and pickups, while the remaining 18,680 were cars and jeeps of different engine power.
Under personal baggage scheme, 12,670 cars of different engine power were imported having a value of Rs4.580 billion, followed by 4,651 cars having a value of Rs1.186 billion imported under transfer of residence and 44 cars under gift scheme.
Despite the fact that 10,655 cars of 1,000cc engine power were highest in number imported during the period under review, cars with high engine power ranging from 1801cc to 3000cc were also fairly large in number at 1,831 having import value of Rs1.515 billion.
The customs import figures also disclosed that cars with 1301 to 1500cc engine power were also large in number at 1988, but four-wheel drive jeeps stood second highest at 2120 with import bill at Rs1.846 billion.
Import of commercial vehicles was dominated by trucks which were 3,595 in number, having a total imported cost of Rs1.282 billion, followed by vans at 2,563 having import bill at Rs1.438 billion.
