KARACHI, March 2: Various parts of the city went without water on Saturday after two pipelines, one at a service road of Sharea Faisal near Fatima Jinnah Road, and another near Khwaja Ajmair Nagri police station, burst.
The localities which were affected due to bursting of the pipelines included Keamari, Bhutta Village, Trans Lyari, Hijrat Colony, Sultanabad, Fisheries, North Karachi’s sectors 2, 3, 4, 5-C-1 and 5-C-2.
The pipeline that burst at a service road of Sharea Faisal was of 33-inch dia, while the one near Khwaja Ajmair Nagri police station was of 12-inch dia.
Though the water which had spread on the service road of Sharea Faisal as well as on the nearby Fatima Jinnah Road was drained away in less than one hour, because the road enjoys a VVIP status, but the water that had accumulated on the street of a residential area near Khwaja Ajmair Nagri police station could not be drained till Saturday evening.
The KWSB sources said the repairing of the 33-inch dia pipeline had already been undertaken and all the localities hooked to it would start getting normal supply of water by early Sunday morning.
Although the two pipelines had burst the same day, the KWSB officials did not issue any press release to inform the residents of the affected localities about their water supply position. Besides, no senior official of the KWSB could be contacted for ascertaining the causes of the bursts and their impact on the affected localities which are supplied water through them.
Hundreds of houses in North Karachi’s another sector (11-B) also experienced acute water shortage due to a leakage in a pipeline near house No A-721 and adjacent to Aisha Bakery.
Residents of the affected locality complained that in spite of the fact that the pipeline had been leaking for the last two weeks, the officials of the KWSB had not succeeded in plugging the leakage.
They urged the City Nazim and the KWSB managing-director to direct the concerned staff to repair the leaking pipeline without any further delay as they could not afford to buy private water tankers for such a longer period.
