HYDERABAD, Feb 28: The holding of a cattle market in the city had resulted in a dispute between Nazims of different union councils.
As the proceedings of a session of the City Taluka Council started here on Wednesday, Abdul Hameed stood on a point of order and drew the attention of the house towards the minutes of the last meeting.
He said that the house had approved that contract of the Cattle Bazaar should be given at Rs360,000 to Habibullah Khaskheli but it was given at Rs361,000 to other contractor, as mentioned in the minutes.
Other members also stood up and raised clamour, forcing the Convenor to announce the constitution of a six-member committee to decide the issue.
The Cattle Bazaar had to be shifted by the police to the plot of the now defunct Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (HMC) near central jail.
This issue was also raised in the District Council Session by UC-1 Nazim, Jiando Soomro.
The cattle traders had also filed a contempt of court application in the Sindh High Court against the district police officer, City Taluka Nazim and others for ejecting them from city.
The house also discussed the issue of contract of pushcarts licence fee. The members said that the pushcart owners were to pay Rs300 annually to each taluka council in spite of the fact that the HMC had now been abolished.
Illahi Bux proposed that the pushcart owners should pay the license fee to the taluka council in whose jurisdiction they lived.
A five-member committee was also formed by the Convenor to decide the issue and submit recommendations in the next session.
The taxation officer informed the house that the contract of license fee was awarded at Rs558,000 as per policy of the government that 15 per cent increase was always to be made in the contract.
The house deferred several resolutions. The Convenor said that the education officials and HDA officials should be informed that their presence was needed in the house.
The resolution of Ajmeri pertained to the poor standard of education in the government schools and illegal operation of private schools in deserted buildings.
The resolution held the education department responsible for the declining standard of education in the government-run institutions as the rate of admission in government schools had fallen remarkably.
Azhar Sheikh, through his resolution, tried to bring to notice the issue of opening of meat selling shops at different paces.
He said that it was contrary to the municipal and health laws and called for banning the open sale of fish, hen and meat.
RATODERO WORKERS: The secretary general, Mutahidda Labour Federation of Pakistan, and central leader, Pakistan Workers Confederation, Qam-oos Gul Khattak extended full support to the employees of the Ratodero tehsil council, Larkana District, who were on strike and expressed grave concern over the harassment of the striking workers by the police.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, he said that it was a real irony that on the one hand the poor workers had not been paid their salaries for 11 months and on the other they were being subjected to violence by the police.
