LAHORE, May 8: At least 200 people staged a protest demonstration in front of Baghbanpura police station on Tuesday against the police for not arresting two killers of a 22-year-old man and releasing a suspected woman, relative of the accused.

Shahid, 22, was murdered by brothers Akbar and Pappu, nephews of Shamim of Awami Cold Storage, Bund Road, in the early hours of Monday on the day of his marriage.

Haji Ismaeel, the father of Shahid, and a resident of Rana Town, Muslimabad, suspected involvement of Shamim who was against the marriage of her stepdaughter Nadia with Shahid.

Shamim was detained by the police for interrogation but later released.

The protesters, including family members and neighbours, placed Shahid’s body in front of the police and raised slogans against Baghbanpura investigation in charge for releasing Shamim and not arresting the accused.

They reportedly burnt tyres and blocked traffic for at least one and a half hours near Shalimar Chowk. Police high ups rushed to the spot and assured them that the accused would be arrested soon.

A heavy police contingent was called to avoid untoward situation.

Later, police detained Shamim, her sister Shahida and one accused Pappu while teams were constituted to trace main accused Akbar.
