RAWALPINDI, March 20: The lawyers’ protest against the presidential reference and manhandling of Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry as well as lawyers enters 11th day on Wednesday.
The lawyers in Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal and other Potohar districts continued one-hour hunger strike, boycott of court proceedings and staged protest demonstrations against the police action against lawyers and mediapersons.
The lawyers staged a protest demo in Rawalpindi Kutcheri Chowk, chanted anti-government slogans and blocked traffic.
Earlier, during a meeting, the District Bar Association passed two resolutions condemning the police action against lawyers in Lahore and a private TV channel in Islamabad.
They praised those judges who have resigned and termed the action a major step towards the independence of the judiciary.
Rawalpindi Bar President Khalid Ismail Abbas, vice-president Abdul Majeed Malik, general-secretary Syed Intizar Mehdi Shah, Makhdoom Niaz Inqlabi and senior lawyers addressed the protesters, seeking withdrawal of reference against the chief Justice, removal of the government and punishment to the police officials and personnel for baton-charging the lawyers.—Dawn Report
