Growers hold rallies against water shortage

DADU, Feb 22: The growers of Johi Taluka held a demonstration in front of the Johi Press Club on Friday to protest against the artificial shortage of irrigation water in all the waterways which originated from the Johi barrage.

The growers carrying banners and placards raised slogans against the SDO, Irrigation, Johi.

They were led by the chairman of the Abadgars Association, Johi Ghulam Qadir Rind.

Earlier on Thursday a large number of growers of Johi taluka staged a demonstration outside the press club to protest against shortage of irrigation water.

The growers were carrying banners, placards and raising slogans against the irrigation officials.

The demonstration was led by the president of PPP, Johi taluka, Basheer Ahmed Thaheem, Nazim of Kamal Khan union council Nawaz Ali Rind.

While talking to newsmen, Mr Thaheem alleged that the SDO (irrigation) was selling water to the influential landlords, who had installed 100 lift machines illegally.

Nazim Nawaz Ali Rind said that the shortage of water had adversely affected 75,000 acres of standing wheat crop in Johi taluka.

He appealed to the Sindh governor to declare Johi taluka as calamity-hit area and announce relief package.

LEISHMANIASIS: The EDO (health), Dadu, Dr Sharafuddin Baloch, in his statement, here on Thursday said that 277 patients of Leishmaniasis were admitted to the Dadu Civil Hospital.

He said that 6633 patients of Leishmaniasis were registered at different parts of the hilly areas of the district.

SI INJURED: A sub-inspector was injured and a bandit was arrested during raids at two separate places in Sehwan and Mehar towns on Friday.

On a tip off, the Sehwan police seized eight kilogramme charas from a bag loaded in a Hyderabad-bound bus (No 4440) at the Lal Bag check post on the Indus Highway. No one claimed the ownership of the bag.

The police lodged an FIR under section 9 of the Narcotics Act.

A team of the Mehar police raided a narcotic den in Panhwar mohalla of Mehar town. Sub-inspector Abdullah Khan Buriro was injured seriously with iron rods and clubs during the raid.

Allah Warayo was arrested from the den.

The police also recovered 120 grams charas, one shotgun and 12 cartridges from his possession.

The police have registered three separate cases against Warayo.

The injured sub-inspector was admitted to the Mehar taluka hospital.
