KARACHI, Dec 7: A garbage dump has been created within the Safari Park vicinity in complete disregard of the very concept of a recreation spot frequented by hundreds of men, women and children every day.
Set up in a small portion next to the park’s boundary wall with its opening outside, the garbage dump releases unendurable stench and presents an ugly look.
The Safari Park, though still in the process of development, is spread over an area of 401 acres. Among other facilities, it has an open zoo and many enclosures scattered over an area of 182 acres. The park has a viewing point on a higher altitude at a hillock.
The garbage dumping is bound to become a permanent nuisance to the park’s visitors who include recreation-seeking families, as well as sportsmen and health-conscious people. Most often, people are seen jogging, walking and doing exercises in the park. However, the garbage dump has created an unhealthy atmosphere all around.
The justification for creating such a dumping site within the park is beyond comprehension, said a group of regular visitors, pointing out that the city government was investing millions of rupees in developing these recreational facilities but at the same time it had turned a blind eye towards the garbage dumping that was only destroying the atmosphere.
Besides installation of chairlift and other such expensive attractions, the city government is working on creating an entertainment area within the park for which a UK-based firm has hired services of an expert from Czech Republic.
Residents of the adjoining locality and the Safari Walkers Club have appealed to the city nazim to look into the matter. They maintained that Safari Park was the only spot providing recreation and fun to a huge population of several towns in the heart of the city but the health hazards like this dumping site would keep many of them away.
