SC disposed of 1,027 cases in September

ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: The Supreme Court disposed of 1,027 cases in September 2006 as against institution of 926 new cases leaving a total backlog of 13,831 cases.

At the principal seat of Islamabad 803 cases were decided against the newly institution of 452 cases. At the branch registry, Lahore, 177 cases were disposed of as compared to fresh institution of 329 cases; at branch registry, Karachi, seven cases were disposed of whereas 43 cases were instituted; at Peshawar branch registry six cases were disposed of against newly registered 63 cases and at branch registry, Quetta, 34 cases were disposed of whereas 39 cases were registered.

The pendency of the cases in the apex court on September 1, 2006 was 13,932 cases whereas 926 fresh cases were instituted during the same month. Thus the progressive total of backlog on September 30, 2006 was 14,858, out of which 1,027 cases were disposed of during the month leaving the backlog on October 1, 2006 as 13,831.

The strategy to prepare cause lists in advance and discouraging adjournment during the last months helped in achieving the purpose of accelerating disposal of the cases besides judges also worked hard as a team to dispose of the cases expeditiously in order to provide justice to the litigants without unnecessary delay.
