TOBA TEK SINGH, Feb 12: All the canals of the lower Chenab irrigation system will be remodelled with the financial assistance of the World Bank (WB).
This was stated by the Punjab Governor, Lt-Gen Khalid Maqbool (retired), in a meeting with Nazims and councillors here at the district council lawn on Tuesday.
The governor said shortage of water would be overcome with the increase in 2,500 to 3,000 cusecs of water supply in the district.
He assured that the irrigation officials would be asked to restore the water supply in the district which had been suspended in both the canals during desilting.
On lawyers demand for approval of residential colony and funds for libraries in the district and tehsil Bars, he assured them that facilities would be provided to them. He urged them not to oppose the establishment of anti-terrorism courts, saying the decision was taken to expedite awarding sentences to the culprits.
Mr Maqbool said around 30,000 teachers, minimum BA/BEd, would be inducted in various schools on a contract. He announced that an electronic library would be set up in the local Government College for Women. Grant for the construction of blocks in boys and girls colleges and provision of bus to the Gojra Women College would also be ensured, he added.
He pledged to approve grant for a cardiology unit in the Divisional Headquarters Hospital and the Nishtar Hospital, Multan. Each basic health unit (BHU) would have a doctor, he said.
The completion of under construction press club, a park and a sports stadium would be ensured, he said, adding an amount of Rs360 million would be sent on various development projects.
He praise the district police chief’s efforts for decreasing crime rate and arresting 13 gangs.
