LOS ANGELES, Feb 12: France’s subtle comedy “Amelie”, India’s “Lagaan” and Bosnia’s “No Man’s Land” were on Tuesday nominated as best foreign language film for this year’s Oscars.

Also vying for the coveted prize were Norway’s “Elling” and Argentina’s “Son of The Bride” (“El hijo de la novia”).

Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the film won a total of five Oscar nominations including for achievement in sound, best art direction, cinematography, and best original screenplay.

The uplifting tale of a woman who aimes to spread happiness, “Amelie” has had a tremendous box office success in the United States taking in 24 million dollars.

“Lagaan”, which was a major hit in the sub-continent, tells the story of the adversities faced by poor farmers in India under British rule during the late 19th century.—AFP
