Lancashire title bid held-up by old foes

Published August 13, 2006

LONDON, Aug 12: Lancashire's county championship push was held up by traditional rivals Yorkshire on Friday when their Old Trafford encounter petered out into a draw.

Despite the result, Lancashire still managed to extend their lead at the top of the table by 11 points.

Yorkshire batted out the final day with Craig White completing his second championship century of the season before falling for 119 and there were also match-saving contributions from Steven Patterson (46) and Michael Lumb (68).

An unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 113 between Nic Pothas and Shane Warne helped challengers Hampshire secure a draw against Middlesex at Lord's.

Ed Smith's unbeaten 147 and 92 from Ed Joyce helped Middlesex set a target of 330 as they declared on 309 for four. Hampshire looked to be struggling to save the game at one point as they slipped to 87 for four but Pothas (74 not out) and Warne (61 not out) dug them out of trouble.

There was not enough time to push for victory and they finished on 283 for seven.
