KARACHI: A group show titled Tasalsul (continuity) curated by eminent painter Tanweer Farooqi concluded at the Arts Council on Saturday evening.

The title of the exhibition is to do with the illustrious tradition in fine art that Karachi’s artists have been able to develop over the decades. Of late, the city has become the cultural capital of Pakistan, but even in the past, Karachi produced a big number of painters and sculptors who not only impressed art lovers, critics and practitioners in the country but all across the globe.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Farooqi said, “The reason for keeping the title Tasalsul is that it’s a continuation of the art scene which was created post-1947 in Karachi. By that I mean that the vibrant art culture in the city was developed after independence. We’ve kept the works of those Karachi painters who are following in the footsteps of the seniors or masters that represented their city in the past.”

He said the artists have come up with paintings in their own contemporary styles — using acrylic, oil and mixed media on canvas. With reference to their selection, he said, “We wanted the artworks of those to be displayed who for any reason haven’t had the opportunity to exhibit their works at the Arts Council. Most of them belong in that category.”

Mr Farooqi said in total three dozen artworks made by 30 creative souls are on view.

The participating artists are: A Q Arif, Abeeha Mirza, Abid Hasan, Akram Spaul, Aliya Faizi, Aamir Khatri, Annal Haque, Arif Ansari, Arsalan Naqvi, Asma Baig, Farrukh Shahab, Fauzia Khan, Hajra Khan, Inshaal Tahir, Khusro Sabzwari, Moazzam Ali, Nisar Ahmed, S A Noory, S M Fawad, S M Naqvi, Sadia Arif, Salman Farooqi, Samina Mumtaz, Shahzad Zar, Shan Amrohvi, Shazia Salman, Taabir Noorani, Wasi Haider, Zafar Mahmood and Zuleikha Mandhokhail.
