Nomi to face Jalil for singles crown

KARACHI, June 2: Top seed Nomi Qamar and second seed Jalil Khan were through to the men’s singles final of the 10th Anti Tobacco Day tennis tournament at the CDGK Sports Complex, Kashmir Road, on Friday.

Nomi got the better of Adnan Khan 7-5, 6-2 while Jalil had a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 sailing over Khalid Ali Nazar in the two pre-finals.

The two face each other for the title clash on Sunday.

Sehr Khawaja, a former national hard court champion and top seed, won two matches in a day to book a berth in the women’s singles final.

After downing teenaged Mariam Madraswala 6-0, 6-0 she accounted for Aley Zehra 6-1, 6-2. The latter got a walkover against Bushra Chwala in the quarterfinal.

Sehr now meets the winner of Shahrukh and Shandana in the final on Sunday.

Bespectacled Ghulam Abbas, the top seed, and third seed Abbas Raza will take on each other in the Juniors U-18 final on the penultimate day Saturday.

The former downed unseeded Zuhair Raza 6-1, 6-3 while the latter inflicted 6-3, 6-3 defeat on Mustafa Zaidi in the two semis.

Omer Shahid also propelled into the Boys U-15 singles final when he squeezed past Mustafa Zaidi 6-0, 6-4 in the first semifinal.

He takes on winner of the second semifinal Zuhair Raza-Abdul Rehman.
