KARACHI, May 31: The couple claiming the kidnapping of their newly born baby was formally detained by the police on Wednesday on charges of making baseless claims and lodging a fake FIR.
The detention came after issuance of the medical report by the Aga Khan Hospital on Wednesday stating that no evidence of recent delivery by the woman was found.
Earlier, Shazia had undergone three examinations one each at the JPMC, Civil Hospital and Liaquat National Hospital. All three reports citied no evidence of delivery, but Home Minister Rauf Siddiqui insisted that the final decision on the case would be taken only after the report of the Aga Khan University Hospital, sources said.
The report prepared by Dr Rahat Qureshi, Associate Professor at Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of AKUH, in its conclusion stated that medical examination and the ultrasound assessment were showing without any doubts that the Shazia had not delivered a child last Tuesday (i.e) May 23, 2006 or any time recently.
“Shazia is suffering from secondary amenorrhea and should be investigated and treated if she wishes to have any child,” the report concluded.
Following the report, the home minister ordered the arrest of the couple for making false claims and wasting precious time of the police.
However, senior investigators citing legal formalities said that initially the FIR 130/2006 lodged by the couple would rendered ‘B-Class’ by the court following which an FIR under Section 182 would be lodged against the couple and they would be formally arrested. At the moment police have detained the couple for the purpose of interrogation as the couple could not be formally arrested immediately, investigators said.
DSP Gul Hameed Samoo told Dawn that two hospitals – the JPMC and the National Institute of Child Health – may also lodge a formal complaint against the couple for maligning their reputation. Thus, the couple may face two separate FIRs against them, the DSP added.
