QUETTA, May 5: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) leaders have assured the Iranian people that their Muslim brethren in Pakistan would firmly stand by them against any US aggression and vowed to struggle for enforcement of Islamic system in the country.

Speaking at the Nafiz Shariat Conference at the Meezan Chowk, organised by the JUI(F), after Juma prayers, the speakers urged people to foil conspiracies of the establishment and intelligence agencies to divide the MMA.

Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman, MNAs Liaquat Baloch, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari, Maulana Noor Mohammad and Allama Jalil Naqvi addressed the conference.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that the Nishtar Park incident was a conspiracy to pit the Deobandis and Barelvis against each other and weaken the MMA platform, adding that it was the responsibility of religious parties to frustrate the designs of intelligence agencies.

He claimed that the rulers who wanted to implement the US agenda were not happy with the unity in the ranks of the MMA leadership.

He said that the formation of the religious alliance had perturbed the anti-Islamic forces.

He said that the MMA’s main objective was to enforce Islamic Shariah, adding that there could be no compromise on the basic principles.

He said the MMA and opposition parties were in contact and agreed on some points pertaining to restoration of the Constitution, revival of democracy, removal of the president and the army’s non-political role, but differed on some other issues. He, however, said there would be a joint struggle against dictatorship.

Referring to the agreement on the 17th amendment between the MMA and the government, Maulana Fazl said that the MMA withdrew from the agreement after the president had deviated from the accord.

Maulana Fazl criticised President Musharraf’s foreign policy because of which, he said, the western border with Afghanistan had become unsafe. He said that when the Taliban were in power the border was secure but the Karzai government which supported India was challenging the legality of the Durand Line.

He called for withdrawal of the graduation condition for contesting provincial and National Assembly elections and cautioned that if the Ulema were debarred from participating in polls the religious groups would become more dangerous in the streets.

He said that the United States had failed to achieve desired results in Afghanistan and Iraq, adding that occupation forces which claimed to be the champions of democracy and fundamental rights were torturing innocent Muslims in the prisons of Kabul and Baghdad.

Liaquat Baloch condemned the military operation in Balochistan and Waziristan and demanded that the Balochistan issue should be resolved in accordance with recommendations of the parliamentary committee and the Balochistan Assembly.

Allama Jalil Naqvi describe that the United States as an enemy of Pakistan and Islam. He said the US government had double standards on issues pertaining to Israel and Palestine, Kashmir, India and nuclear technology.

The conference adopted resolutions calling for enforcement of Islamic laws and withdrawal from the campaign against innocent Muslims. Other resolutions said that the armed forces should revert to their professional job instead of getting involved in politics, extra-constitutional arrests should be stopped and all detained political workers should be freed, military operations in Balochistan and Waziristan should be stopped, Balochistan farmers’ demands should be accepted, load-shedding should be ended, maximum autonomy should be given to provinces with the centre retaining currency, defence, foreign policy and communications.
