Nowshera trounce Afghanistan

PESHAWAR, Oct 16: Nowshera District crushed Afghanistan by 10 wickets Tuesday in a one-sided the two-day match of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Grade-II played here at Gymkhana ground.

Afghanistan were virtually condemned to a humiliating defeat at the end of the first day’s play when shot out for 124 while Nowshera scored 224 to gain 99 runs lead in the first innings.

The visitors fared a little better in the second innings and were all out for 197 leaving Nowshera 98 for victory which they achieved without losing a wickets.

Even in the crushing defeat Afghanistan’s number seven batsman Shafi-ur-Rehman batted magnificently to strike an elegant 95 off 110 balls that atleast delayed the inevitable and avoided the ignominy of an innings defeat.

Shafi smashes struck 11 powerfully struck fours and a towering six and was desperately unlucky to miss the coveted three figures. He scored an unbeaten 18 in the first innings.

ABANDONED

The two-day Quaid-i-Azam Grade-II match between Nawabshah and Jacobabad was abandoned due to internal tussle between two groups.

The match was to start at Nawabshah Stadium Monday.

Chairman selection body Nawabshah Ghulam Rasool Memon claimed Tuesday that as one of sports officers Ali Nawaz Khalidi wanted to induct two of his boys in the local team otherwise he would not allow the match to get underway at Nawabshah Stadium which is the property of Sindh Sports Board (SSB).

Ghulam Rasool said Jacobabad team had already arrived a day before to play the match. However many local followers of the game left disappointed when the match could not start.

DADU BEAT MIRPURKHAS

KARACHI: Dadu made a commanding debut in the Quaid-i-Azam trophy Grade-II championship when they overwhelmed fancied Mirpurkhas by an innings and 92 runs at KCCA Stadium.

Dadu made 264 for seven wickets in 65 overs of the first innings. Mirpurkhas were dismissed for 66 in their first innings minute before stumps on the first day and after being forced the follow-on they were bowled out for 106 in 31.2 overs 25 minutes after lunch break.

Medium pacer Kashif Ali who grabbed six for 17 in the first innings added two for 28 in ten over in the second to finish with math haul of eight for 45.

Left arm spinner emerged as the most successful bowler with three wickets for three runs in 4.2 over, mopping up the tail. Leg spinner Javed Liaquat chipped in with two for 28.

NASEERABAD’S TRIUMPH

Newcomer Naseerabad registered an impressive innings and 44 runs triumphs against Turbat in their opening match at Asghar Ali Shah Stadium.

Resuming at their overnight score of 215 for six wickets, Naseerabad were all out for 276, gaining a massive 168 runs first innings lead.

Turbat which were skittled out for 108 in their first innings scored 16 runs more in the second innings, before being dismissed for 124.

Bashir Ahmed starred in Naseerabad’s victory. After claiming three wickets in Turbat’s first outing with his left arm spin, he added 3-37 in the second to end with match haul of six for 77 runs.

Bashir also slammed 42 with two boundaries in Naseerabad’s only innings.

ALI, RIZWAN SPARKLE

Opener Ali Ahmed made a superb hundred as Quetta overwhelmed Kalat by nine wickets in Quaid- i- Azam Trophy grade-II tie at PCB Regional Academy Ground Tuesday.

Quetta amassed 299 for four wickets in stipulated 65 overs of the first innings after resuming at overnight score of 122 for one wicket.

Kalat made 228 in its first innings and spun out for 110 in the second innings with Karachi guest player left arm spinner Mohtashim Rasheed claiming five for 21 in 18 overs and off- spinner Naseer Khan taking three for 30 in 13 overs.

Quetta opener Ali punished Kalat hitting six boundaries after facing 152 balls and occupying the crease for 220 minutes.

Ali put on 201 runs for the second wicket with Sabir Hussain who made 79 with three fours and a six and Mohtashim Ali making hard hitting unbeaten 52 off 48 balls with four hits to the fence.

Quetta collected 12 points for their win.

At Makli Stadium Thatta, Thatta defeated Badin by ten wickets with slow left arm spinner Rizwan Qureshi finishing with match haul of 13 for 129 and also scoring 45 not out.

Mianwali thrashed Azad Jammu and Kashmir by 10 wickets at KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi with off-spinner Rizwan Ahmed picking up a match bag of nine for 56.

DRAWN TIE

The match between Shikarpur and Sukkur districts ended in a draw here at Niaz Stadium Tuesday as the target of 274 set by Shikarpur for Sukkur proved too tough.

Sukkur started the first innings with overnight score of 81 for five and lost the remaining five wickets for the addition of of 35 to be all out for 116.

Mushtaq Ahmed was the highest rungetter with 35. Majid Raja was the most successful bowler taking four wickets for 18 runs while Shakeel Muhammed chipped in with two for 24.

Having gained a first innings lead of 67, Shikarpur declared its second innings at 179 for three in 30 overs setting a target of 247. Muhammed Ramzan made a whirlwind 66 laced with five sixes and four boundaries.
