LAHORE, March 18: Shahid Javed Khan carded a fine seven-under- par-65 to retain leaderboard with aggregate 135, on a day when a large number of under-par cards were produced, in the 9th All Pakistan golf championship at Lahore Gymkhana course on Saturday.
Shahid was a joint leader on the first day with Imdad Hussain, Matloob Ahmed and Yasaya Habib but on second day he excelled to grab six birdies and an eagle over the 16th while having only one bogey at the 14th.
Shahid completed the first round at five-under-par-31 and back nine at two-under-34.
He registered birdies at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 11th and the 17th.
But Shahid faces threat from M. Munir, who was only one stroke behind after shattering the course record, by entering an outstanding card of eight-under-par-64.
He broke the previous record of 65 set by Ghulam Nabi way back in mid 90s. Shahid, the leader, equalised the record.
Munir, who failed to perform well in the All Pakistan Garrison golf earlier this month and was also unimpressive on the opening day with a card of 72, played a bogeyless round to steal the show.
He had eight birdies, 1st, 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, 16th and the 17th.
He did the first nine hole with five-under-par-31 and back nine at three-under-33.
Matloob of Lahore Gymkhana though produced better card of 69 as compared to 70 on the first day, he went down to the third position with aggregate 139.
Matloob completed the inward impressively, five-under-par-31 but faltered at the outward, having three bogeys at the 10th, 12th and 14th.
He earned birdies at the 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 15th, 16th. At 141, three contenders were bracketed at the fourth spot, including two first day leaders Yasaya (70,71), Imdad (70,71) and M Shabbir (75, 66).
At 142, Ansar Mahmood was struggling at the fifth position. In the amateur category, M Safdar (148) was the leader followed by Wasim Rana (150) and Daniyal Jehangir (153).
An amateur Shahid Waraich earned the feat of Hole-in-One at par3-5th hole but he could not win the car as the organiser had confined it to a professional.
According to the rule, in case of an amateur does Hole-in-One he can earn the prize but he will have to play as professional for two years.
