KARACHI: Nisar for continued reforms

KARACHI, Feb 26: Chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production and Senior Vice-President of the PML Senator Nisar A. Memon has stressed on continuity of effective reforms in the economic, political and social sectors for increased stability.

“These reforms are imperative to alleviate poverty and ensure rapid development,” he observed while talking to a group of senior journalists at his residence.

The need for showing maturity on various national issues and greater cohesion among various influential segments of the society to achieve the desired objectives is needed today more than ever before. In this regard, he called for increasing parliament supervision to make this institution stronger.

In the context of poverty alleviation, Nisar Memon emphasised on providing jobs to the jobless on a merit basis.

He said that the MQM and Sindh government would ensure passing on jobs on the basis of equality and help bring forward merited people, capable of contributing towards national progress.

At the same, the senator hoped, the Sindh government would ensure that all the departments recruited people on merit irrespective of their political affiliations and in this regard, MQM would hopefully adopt more positive stance.

In reply to a question, Mr Memon said that he would arrange a briefing for journalists on defence and defence production through the ISPR.

Replying to another question, he nullified the impression about any irregularities having been committed in defence purchases, and said: “Action is certainly taken when any such instance comes to the government’s knowledge. The Senate Committee will certainly take notice if any such thing is brought to its notice.”

He maintained that defence purchases were made under strict rules and regulations.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued here on Sunday, Senator Nisar Memon pledged that he would personally look into the problems being faced by Pakistan Steel employees.

According to the statement, the senator, who is also vice-president of the PML, held out the assurance while talking to a delegation of the Pakistan Steel Employees Action Committee which called on him to discuss the proposed privatization of the steel mill the employees’ concerns in this regard.

Mr Memon assured the delegation that he would approach the higher authorities for acceptance of the employees’ demands. He said he would personally take interest in the matter.

“Prosperity of workers is imperative for the progress of the country,” he remarked.

Members of the delegation exchanged views with the PML leader on the package prepared by the Privatization Commission and presented various proposals for bringing about an improvement in it.

The delegation comprised Haji Khan Lashari of the Organization of Pakistan Steel Officers, Zafar Khan of the Pakistan Steel Labour Union, Ghaffar Memon of the Employees Union Pakistan Steel, Mohammed Aslam Nazeer Ahmed of the Staff and Workers Union, Abdul Sattar Butt of the Pakistan Steel Officers Welfare Association, Khalid Hussain, Chaudhry Akbar, Younus Ghuman and Chaudhry Aslam Saeed Ahmed of the Labour League of Pakistan Steel and others.—APP
