GUJRANWALA, Feb 20: As many as 178 community centres which had been constructed for mass welfare in remote areas of the district some years ago, have been occupied by influential people.
The district administration has ordered preparation of a grabbers’ list for issuing them final notices to vacate these centres, it is learnt here.
At a meeting held here on Monday presided over by DCO Manzer Hayat, a senior local government officer pointed out that 178 community centres were under the official jurisdiction of the district government.
The meeting suggested that these centres be reserved for women health, technical training institutes, offices of the government functionaries, including union councils, and other welfare programmes of people. The executive district officers and other senior officials of revenue, literacy, community development, livestock and planning were also present in the meeting.
NEW MACHINERY: A sum of Rs47 million has been allocated for provision of modern machinery to Rachna College of Engineering and Technology at Jora (Wazirabad) along with other facilities to students.
This was stated by DCO Manzer Hayat while speaking at the annual convocation of the college on Monday.
BISE WORKSHOP: The board of intermediate and secondary education (BISE) on Monday organised a workshop of head examiners and their deputies for reforming examination system and removing discrepancies at the board complex.
BISE chairman Masudul Haq, controller (examination) Prof Dr Mumtaz Ahmad Awan and other senior officers urged the examiners to conduct exams effectively to promote quality education.
It was reportedly the first workshop of its nature in the history of the board in which about 350 to 400 examiners and their deputies from six districts participated.
ACCIDENT: A rickshaw driver was killed while four passengers, including a woman, were injured in a road accident near Tetley on Monday.
Reports said a speeding peter rickshaw rammed into a tree as a result of which its driver Falak Sher died on the spot while Navid, Aziz Ahmad, Nazir and Bushra Bibi were injured. They were rushed to the DHQ hospital in a critical condition.
