KARACHI, Jan. 20: The Sindh National Alliance on Thursday rejected the recently announced National Finance Commission award and has also rejected the proposed construction of any new dams on Indus.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the SNA leaders held at the residence of Sindh National Front chief.

The meeting, chaired by SNF chief Mumtaz Bhutto, was attended by Dr Qadir Magsi, Bashir Qureshi, Khaliq Junejo, Gul Mohammad Jakhrani, Ghulam Shah, Ayub Shar, Dr Dodo Mehri, Shafi Qirnani, and others.

The meeting rejected the NFC award and said that Sindh paid more taxes and earned more for the national exchequer, but the distribution of resources was done on the basis of population.

It also condemned construction of new dams on the Indus and said that Basha and other proposed dams were to be constructed in the seismically active zone where earthquakes were a routine.

In case of an earthquake, the dams would be damaged and the water stored would create havoc in the nearby areas. It said efforts be made to conserve the over 48 million acre feet water being wasted owing to inefficient irrigation system.

The meeting criticized the president for using derogatory language for Sindhis and demanded that unconditional apology be extended.

It also condemned the army action in Balochistan and demanded that those who were just issuing statements against it should come out and start the struggle against the army action. It also slated the arrest of students and political activists and said if there were any charges against them, they should be produced in courts and tried.
