Two hydel stations in Punjab

GUJRANWALA, Jan 4: At least Rs750 million are being spent on the establishment of two hydel stations in Punjab for the provision of power supply to industrialists on cheaper rates. This was stated by Punjab Industry Minister Muhammad Ajmal Mian while speaking at a business community meeting here on Wednesday.

The minister pointed out that one hydel power station was being set up at the Upper Jhelum Canal at a cost of Rs250 million which would generate 3.2 megawatt electricity.

He assured the business community that the government would provide them better facilities for the promotion of business activities.

Investors should set up more industrial units for putting the country on the road to progress and prosperity, he suggested.

DEATH SENTENCE: A local court on Wednesday handed down death sentence to an accused while life-term to his accomplice and fined Rs240,000 collectively in a murder case.

They will have to pay Rs200,000 to heirs of the deceased in case of default in the payment of fine.

According to the prosecution, convicts Dawood Butt and Sodagar Butt had killed factory owner Muhammad Shafiq over some monetary issue in January 2005.

Challan tickets: The traffic police claimed to have issued 30,683 challan tickets and impounded 5,739 vehicles on violation of traffic laws during December 2005. This was stated by traffic SP Asgher Saeed Paul at a briefing here.

He said as many as 3,700 wagons, 4,169 motorcycle-rickshaws, 8,490 motorcycles, 1,508 pickups, 178 cabs, 117 coasters, 413 trucks, 331 cars, 491 tractor-trolleys and about a dozen pajeros were issued challan tickets in six districts. He said fine totalling Rs3.6 million was recovered from them.

COUPLE KILLED:: Robbers entered the house of Fariad and killed him and his wife Mumtaz on resistance, 15km away from here, on Wednesday.

Reports said six robbers forcibly entered the house of Fariad and started looting valuables. On resistance, they opened fire on the inmates, killing Fariad and his wife Mumtaz. His mother Naziran was injured and taken to hospital.
