KARACHI, Jan 30: All unauthorised water connections will be disconnected to hotels situated at Sheedi Village Road near Lea Market.

According to a resource, the step had been taken to solve the longstanding water problem at Lea Market and Aat Chowk in Lyari Town.

The decision was taken at a meeting here which decided to specifically reserve the existing 12” dia waterline running along the Sheedi Village Road for residential areas and an alternative waterline would be provided to hotels for commercial purposes.

The representatives of hotels management agreed with the proposed alternate arrangement and assured the KWSB staff that they would have grievance if their illegal water connections are disconnected.

A joint team, comprising four members each from public representatives, tax department, hotel-owners, engineering department and KWSB was set up to supervise the site digging work and check the number and size of connection.

There are 27 hotels situated at the Sheedi Village Road and Aat Chowk. Area people blame the management of these hotels for blocking the waterflow to their localities because of illegal waterlines laid by them.

Owing to these unauthorised connections, the residents said there had always been a water scarcity in Baghdadi, Shah Beg Lane and parts of Chakiwara and Kalakot.

The issue was raised by the local bodies representatives of Chakiwara and Baghdadi at a meeting here to discuss the chronic water shortage problem in these areas.

The Nazims of the both the union councils explained the water shortage in the localities which was persistent for the past several years.

They said there were unauthorised and oversized water connections in various hotels where powerful suction pumps were being operated, blocking water flow to nearby residential areas.

On this occasion, Nazim Lyari Town told the meeting that the residents should not suffer because of water shortage problem whereas the business of the hotels and other commercial units would also get rightful share after fulfilling the required formalities.

A KWSB official informed the meeting about the spots where waterlines needed to be checked.
