NEW DELHI, Jan 26: India on Saturday celebrated its republic day without the traditional show of military might, as the country’s troops, tanks and guns remained along the borders with Pakistan.
Indian President K. R. Narayanan saluted marching contingents of children and paramilitary soldiers in New Delhi’s central vista, as republic day’s chief guest, Mauritian President Cassam Uteem, sat behind bullet-proof glass.
More than 60,000 soldiers and police guarded the city’s streets and the Janpath parade route in an unprecedented security exercise to thwart possible attacks.
