HYDERABAD, Nov 29: The chief minister’s inspection team has sought information about project directors of development of the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar and losses incurred during their incumbency in the wake of delay in completion of the project.

The project was taken up in 1995 by the National Constructions Limited.

The chief administrator, Auqaf, will also provide such details to the inspection team after collecting information from Jamshoro and Dadu districts.

Sources in the Auqaf department said on Tuesday that details of five project directors, Qasim Lashari, Abdul Razzaq Abbasi, Allah Dino Shar, Aijaz Ahmad Mangi and Alam Din Bullo, had been obtained from Dadu.

About 90 per cent work of the project was completed in the first phase at a cost of Rs221.028 million against the estimated cost of Rs234.373 million. In the second phase, Rs17 million has so far been spent on the Dhamal court. The cost for the second phase of the project had been estimated at Rs64.919 million.

It is learnt that project cost-I (PC-I) of Rs142.225 million for two mosques and a langar khana had been approved for the phase-III.

“We did not take over possession of premises which had been re-developed on account of some defects by project consultants,” said Aquaf chief administrator Khawar Noor Shaikh.

The senate’s standing committee on works and environment and urban affairs, headed by Senator Mohammad Ali Brohi, had also submitted a report on the work after a visit to the shrine on March 18, showing dissatisfaction over the quality of work.

The committee in its report had said: “Cracks are found on the dome of the shrine which cause leakage of water; drainage on roofs is inadequate; ‘gold file’ has been fitted on the dome instead of ‘gold plate’; four towers on four corners are quite high with no provision of stairs or ladders; inner decoration of the tomb is incomplete; electric wring of the shrine is improper; wood panelling on inside of the dome is not decorated with Quranic verses and walls with recitation place are not properly cemented and whitewashed”.

The committee had collected material of the shrine i.e. cement, tiles, sand, for laboratory tests.

After discussion, committee members had recommended that cracks on the roof of the shrine should be repaired immediately, drainage capacity should be increased on the tomb roof at least threefold, metallic fixed ladders should be installed on the four towers, proper lightening should be made and inner decoration of the tomb should be done.

The committee had recommended that old taburukat removed from the tomb such as a big stone depicting poetry of Shahbaz and old kalma mubarak on bronze, should be placed back at their locations in the new tomb, detailed drawings should be provided to the authority concerned for the remaining part of phase-II to facilitate construction of two mosques, proper checking of devotees should be done before entering the shrine to avoid any untoward incident and a kateharo of grave should be constructed with wooden structure covered with silver and golden sheet.

It had been further recommended that a master plan should be provided to authorities concerned, railings should be installed with stairs and galleries to avoid any untoward incident and finishing work of marble flouring/cladding should be started.

Auqaf sources said some of recommendations of the senate committee were yet to be implemented.
