KARACHI, Nov 7: Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad on Monday directed the officials concerned to undertake survey of all open drains and make them safe for citizens. He expressed sorrow and grief over the death of a boy and a girl, who fell into an open drain at Abul Hasan Ispahani Road on Sunday night.

The governor asked the officials concerned to conduct survey of open drains, particularly those running along roads, and make them safe for public.

Taking notice of open drains on Sharah-i-Quaideen a few months back, the governor had directed city district government to make them safe. He said that action would be taken against officials for not abiding their duties in this regard.

Meanwhile, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has ordered inquiry into the incident and set up an inquiry team with DCO as its convenor and Nisar Sario, DO (Works and Services), DO (MM) as its members.

Mr Kamal said that if any person of the department was found responsible of negligence or carelessness, strict legal action would be taken against him.

Drowning inquiry: Sindh Tourism Minister Qamar Mansoor ordered inquiry into the incident in which two young picnickers had drowned in Kalri Lake and one of them died.

The minister said it was the responsibility of the officials concerned to make the places of recreation safe. He said action would be taken against those indulging in dereliction of duty.

He said the present government was striving for the promotion of tourism, but such incidents hamper these efforts.

Qamar Mansoor asked the DPO Thatta and DIG Headquarters to coordinate with the department regarding strengthening of rules and regulations for provision of security to the people at the places of recreation.—APP
