PESHAWAR, Jan 21: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has said the government will amend the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) according to wishes of the people so that the new law could be made harmonious with the principles of justice.

The governor was presiding over a meeting of the task force on the affairs of Fata and Pata here on Monday, stated an official statement.

The meeting deliberated upon recommendations regarding devolution of power, proposed judicial system, administrative reforms, maintenance of law and order situation in view of the prevailing tradition and Jirga system in tribal areas.

Lt-Gen Iftikhar said that with the implementation of new system, the tribal areas would also come on a par with other developed areas of the country and the standard of living of the tribal people would improve. He said the change was being brought after thorough consultations with the tribal people on various levels.

Under the new system, the power of decision-making would rest with the people, who would be able to elect their own representatives through a democratic process, the governor added.

The meeting also discussed the electoral process of the proposed new system and presented recommendations regarding setting up of a council of elected members on the level of the agency.

The process of change, he said, could not be repeated time and again, therefore, the government aimed at bringing a complete change so that the tribal people could feel a noticeable change.

The meeting discussed the professional matters of Frontier Corps, re-organization of various departments and the process of giving funds to tribal areas.
