KARACHI, Sept 20: A suspect apparently preferred to shot himself dead instead of surrendering before the police in Defence area on Tuesday night. SHO Defence police station said that a bandit committed dacoity four days back in West Point Towers. The bandit took away cash and jewellery and warned the lady that he would return, the SHO said.

On Tuesday night, the suspect returned to the same apartment and told the lady that he wanted to talk to her. She immediately informed the police.

According to the SHO, as he reached the spot the suspect was fleeing on foot. Police tried to chase him, but he opened fire at the police. The SHO also returned the fire hitting the suspect in the leg. The SHO claimed that as the suspect fell down he shot himself in the head.

Police recovered a pistol from his possession.

ACCIDENTS: An elderly man died in a road accident in Ferozabad on Tuesday.

Police said that Syed Akbar Ali, 68, was crossing Baloch Colony overpass when a speeding car knocked him down. He was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said that the errant driver escaped leaving the car which was later impounded by the police.

The victim had come from Muzaffarabad to visit his son based in the Karachi.

In Malir, a 55-year-old man died in a road accident in the morning.

Police said that the victim was crossing a road near meat market when he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle. Police shifted his body to the JPMC for legal formalities.

In Orangi, a minibus was set on fire by enraged youths when it left a young boy, Salman, injured in a road accident late on Monday night.

The injured boy was taken to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.

Police said that following the accident enraged people set the minibus of route (N-5) on fire.
