HYDERABAD, Jan 18: The leaders of public opinion have hailed the decision of President Pervez Musharraf to restore joint electorate system in the country while addressing a meeting at the Bhurgari House on Thursday.
The director, National Commission for Justice and Peace, Hyderabad, Brother Philip Hera thanked the president of Pakistan for restoring joint electorate system as enjoined in the 1973 Constitution.
He said this step will go a long way in creating an atmosphere of brotherhood among all communities.
The president, Hindu Panchayat, Hyderabad, Eng S.Lal Ahuja and the coordinator, National Alliance for Joint Electorate, in a separate statement also expressed gratitude to the president for restoring the joint electorate system in the country.
He congratulated the minority communities of Pakistan that their prolonged struggle had at last borne fruit.
He thanked the political parties for extending support to the minorities for the restoration of the joint electorate system.
A spokesman of the Sindh Taraqqi Passand Party said that the restoration of the joint electorate system in the country for which the minorities and the progressive forces had struggled for so long was a step in the right direction.
He said that the rulers should also accept the other truths and ground realities and bring about radical changes in the political structure.
The general secretary, PPP, Tharparkar District, Dr. Mahesh Kumar Malani also welcomed the president’s decision to restore joint electorate system in the country.
CPP: A central leader of the Communist Party of Pakistan (CPP), Imdad Qazi said that with the appointment of Justice Irshad Hassan Khan as the chief election commissioner, fair and free elections could not be ensured.
In a statement issued on Friday, he said that fair and impartial elections had never been held in Pakistan which had resulted in the disintegration of the country.
He demanded that the election commission should be appointed after taking all the democratic parties into confidence.
He said Pakistan was passing through a critical phase and if any doubts were created in the minds of the political parties and general public even before the holding of general elections it will not be a good omen for the country.
