KARACHI, Aug 19: An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was gunned down by unknown persons in the Ramaswami area on Friday. Police said Asif Ali, 35, was sitting in front of his home in Arayan Compound in Ramaswami when two motorcycle-riders pulled up there. They reportedly had a brief chat with Asif and pumped a bullet into his abdomen and fled. The young man was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where he died during treatment.
The SHO of Garden police station said Asif Ali was an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
KILLED: An employee of a restaurant died on Friday morning after being wounded on M.R. Kiyani Road on late Thursday night.
Police said that two armed suspects pulled up at the gate of the Red Onion restaurant and disarmed a guard of the Millennium Security Agency. They said that as Azhar Ali, purchasing officer of the eating house, came out of the restaurant to inquire into the matter. The suspects opened fire at him and fled, dumping the repeater gun of the guard there.
They said the repeater gun of the guard was not in working condition.
Police have detained the security guard for questioning.
KIDNAP VICTIM: A hotel owner kidnapped a few days back in Saddar, returned home on late Thursday night. Mohammad Hamid walked free after his family paid an undisclosed amount in ransom to the captors who had demanded Rs10 million.
Mr Hamid, who owns the Paradise Hotel situated on Shahrah-i-Iraq in Saddar, was kidnapped by unknown persons on Aug 16 near the hotel.
Police later found his car (AFB-102) near the Five-Star traffic section in North Nazimabad.
An FIR (93/2005) was registered in the Preedy police station by Fahim, brother of the victim.
Negotiations between the captors and the family continued since the ransom call was received. The law enforcement agencies which specialize in the kidnapping for ransom cases failed to play any effective role in this case.
CPLC chief Sharfuddin Memon said the family of Muhammad Hamid didn’t corporate with the CPLC or the AVCC in securing his release. “Without the family’s assistance, we cannot make progress in such cases of kidnapping for ransom.”
INJURED: In another incident, a man was shot and wounded when he tried to pose resistance to armed suspects in Manghopir on Friday.
Police said that Haroon Abdullah, a shopkeeper, was injured when he refused to submit to demands of the two armed suspects in Baloch Colony, in the Manghopir area.
