Davis Cup coaching camp starts

KARACHI, Jan 15: A coaching camp to select players for the forthcoming Davis Cup tie between Pakistan and Malaysia which is to be held in Kuala Lumpur from 8-10 Feb started at the Karachi Gymkhana Tuesday.

The match between Pakistan and Malaysia is part of the Asia Oceania group II 1st round.

A total of seven probables have been selected for the camp out of which three players will be selected by the selection committee which will meet on Jan 26.

A fourth player, country’s top ranked Aisam-ul-Haq, has already been pre-selected by the camp.

Aisam is presently in Melbourne, Australia, competing in the Australian Open and will join the camp at a later stage.

The remaining players will be selected after trials to be held on round robin league basis.

Former Davis Cupper, Khawaja Saeed Hai has been appointed camp commandant, with Khalid Rehmani as co-ordinater and Rashid Malik an ex-Davis Cupper as coach.

The four-member squad will be accompanied by a non-playing captain who will be selected by the committee after the trials.

The squad will be named at the conclusion of the camp which will be on Feb 3.

Probables: Aqeel Khan, Nomi Qamar, Hasan Mehmood, Asim Shafiq, Masood Ahmed, Kamran Khalil and Shahzad Samad.
