Drug trafficker freed by accomplices

GUJRANWALA, Jan 14: An accused involved in a narcotics case was freed by his accomplices after attacking a police party at Sheranwala Bagh area here on Monday.

The police team was escorting Muhammad Saleem to the police station after arresting him from his house. Meanwhile, his friends gathered there and started pelting stones on police, forcing them to leave the accused.

Kotwali police have registered cases against the accused and his accomplices, including Naeem, Salahuddin and Shahid.

LOOTED: Four robbers looted Rs0.3 million in cash from a bank branch on the Sheikhupura Road here on Monday.

The bandits came to the MCB’s branch by a car (LXO-5327) at 10.15 am. Three of them entered the bank after overpowering the guard on duty while their fourth accomplice remained in the vehicle. Armed bandits held hostage the bank staff and customers, collected Rs0.3 million in cash and escaped from the scene.

SUSPENDED: The Range DIG on Monday suspended an SHO from service on the charges of corruption and defective investigation.

Qila Dedar Singh SHO Muhammad Zubair did not register a case against the accused who had kidnapped a girl, ‘S’. The preliminary inquiry found the SHO guilty of charges. A show-cause notice has also been issued to him.

STABBED: Two watchmen of a factory were stabbed to death by their rivals here on Monday.

Gulley Khan and Haji Muhammad were asleep at their outhouse in front of a soft drink factory when unidentified assailants came there and stabbed them with knives.

It is learnt that former had killed a man in the tribal area a few years ago.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.

Meanwhile, two youths were shot dead over different issues in and around the city here on Monday. Muhammad Yasin of Qila Dedar Singh had quarrelled with his sister-in-law who informed her parents. Her father Asmatullah, uncle Muhammad Sharif and brother Kafiatullah came there and after exchanging harsh words, they shot dead Yasin.

Unidentified men took Ijaz Baig from his house to a deserted place. Later, they shot him dead and escaped after throwing his body in the street. The motive behind the murder could not be known.

ARRESTED: The district police on Monday claim to have arrested 19 proclaimed offenders and eight court fugitives and recovered arms and sizable narcotics from their possession.

SSP Muhammad Aslam told newsmen that these criminals were held during a general hold up throughout the district.

He said that police had also recovered four revolvers, two pistols, 200 cartridges besides recovering sizable heroin, hashish and liquor from their possession.

The SSP said the campaign against criminals would continue without any discrimination.

GETS DEATH: The local Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 on Monday awarded death sentence on two counts to a convict and life-term to five other convicts in a double murder case.

The judge acquitted four co-accused — Muhammad Bashir, Nazer Hussain, Nasir Mahmood and Muhammad Iqbal — by giving them the benefit of the doubt.

According to the prosecution, convicts Azher alias Nomi along with Mazaher, Tahir, Shahid, Abdul Khalid and Arif had killed Haq Nawaz and Rukhsar and injured Razzaq, Zulfikar and Rashid in Gujrat on Feb 4, 2000.
