KARACHI: SC decides 681 cases in a week

KARACHI, July 16: Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry presided over a session of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, at Karachi and decided a record number of cases within a week to provide justice to the people. According to statistics issued here on Saturday, 560 income tax cases involving huge government amounts, 18 sales tax matters, 8 service matters and 7 bail matters and in all total 681 cases were decided within a week by SC bench, headed by Chief Justice.

For quick resolution of disputes and dispensation of justice, Chief Justice of Pakistan decided a case of Fatal accident (Karachi Water and Sewerage Board vs Ms Aqeela Bano) in which litigation was going on for the last 15 years.

The Chief Justice ordered payment for Rs693246 to the victims by July 20 which will be distributed among legal heirs.

Besides, the bench of Justice Javed M Buttar and Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad decided 46 cases out of which 10 bail matters, 15 cancellation of bail, two quashments and other criminal cases and 11 services matters.

A two members bench, comprising Justice Hamid Ali Mirza and Justice Faqir Mohammad Khokar, decided 65 cases out of which 41 service matters, pending for many years, 22 cases pertained to labour matters and other important cases.—PPI
