KARACHI, July 7: The administrative judge of the accountability courts, Ms Qaiser Iqbal, ordered release of two dealers of the Thatta Cement Factoy after approving their plea of bargain. Mohammed Iqbal Zai and Uttam Parkash, who were charged with causing loss to the national exchequer through fake rebate claims, were ordered to be released after they made payments to the extent of their liabilities.
Riazul Hasan Rizvi, former MD of TCF, Maqsood Ahmed, manager sales, and dealers, Mohammed Iqbal, Uttam Perkash, Sultan Salahuddin, Mohammed Ashraf and Mahesh Kumar, were arrested in April. The two dealers approached the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau with bargain plea agreeing to pay back the amount they had secured through fake rebate claims. The NAB chairman accepted their plea and referred it to the judge for approval.
NAB’s special public prosecutor Naeem Tanoli placed on record the acceptance letter of the NAB chairman and the pay orders deposited by the two dealers.
Uttam Parkash deposited back Rs900,000 to the extent of his liability, while Mohammed Iqbal Zai made a partial payment of Rs2.35 million out of his total Rs6.92 million liability. He would make the remaining payment in two equal instalments as per the agreement with the NAB authorities.
Meanwhile, a principal appraiser of customs was remanded to the NAB authorities for interrogation into charges of corruption.
Mohammad Irshad Khan allegedly accumulated assets worth million of rupees in his own name and in the name of his family members through corrupt practices.
The accused allegedly owned 2.6 kanal residential plot and 1.16 kanal residential plot in Abbottabad, one kanal residential plot in Mansehra, 500 square yards residential plot in CBR Housing Society, Islamabad, and a 3.9 kanal residential plot in Abbottabad.
Besides, the properties in the name of Irshad’s father Mohammad Khan included a house in Abbottabad.
Moreover, properties in the name of Irshad’s wife included a plot at 8th Commercial Street, Phase-II DHA, Karachi, extra land for the above plot DHA Karachi, a plot measuring 1.3 marla in Abbottabad, a flat in Tooba Apartment in phase-I DHA, a commercial plot in phase-VIII, Saba Avenue DHA.
The accused was appointed LDC in customs in 1970 and became appraiser in 1980.
The accused allegedly amassed tremendous wealth and raised properties after joining the customs. The judge ordered the prosecution agency to produce the accused in court on July 22.
PRO REMANDED: KPT PRO Kafeel Ahmed who was arrested on Wednesday by the National Accountability Bureau for misappropriation of Rs11 million, was remanded to the NAB custody till July 15.
Kafeel allegedly embezzled huge funds on the basis of fake bill of photography. Co-accused Habib Ahmed Khan, KPT’s official photographer, is already in the NAB custody.
