KARACHI, June 20: Four Pakistan pugilists moved ahead but an underachiever Bilal Ghazi bowed down in the inaugural Asian Junior championship opening round at KPT Sports Complex on Monday. It was easy sailing for Pakistan’s Nisar Khan, Ali Mohammad, Sajjad Qambrani and Karrar Hussain who won their bouts on referee stopped the contest (RSC) decisions, but Bilal and Barkat Ali crashed out of the championship after humiliating defeats.

Asian junior lightweight bronze medallist Karrar dominated against Sri Lanka’s P.A.I. Rajapaksha, while the visitor tried to take advantage of his longer reach.

Karrar started the second round with a ferocious combination of left and right which was followed by eight mandatory counts for the Sri Lankan. The fight was over in the third round when the Sri Lankan received eight mandatory counts after thrashing by Karrar, prompting referee to give RSC verdict in Pakistani’s favour.

Bantamweight Ali Mohammad prevailed over Japan’s Naoto Uebayashi from the first bell and emerged victor when referee stopped the bout in the second round following severe beating by the local boxer.

Sajjad won the featherweight bout on RSC verdict in the second round against R.M.T. Daksilath of Sri Lanka. Although the Sri Lankan enjoyed reach advantage, Sajjad prevailed and the referee gave Daksilath eight counts that ended the bout in Pakistani’s favour.

Nisar became light-flyweight winner when he outclassed Afghanistan’s Mohammad Aref Nazari, starting the bout in an aggressive mood. While Nisar continued his domination in the second round, he finished off with strong blows which gave the Afghan eight counts twice in the third round.

While four Pakistani boxers had one-sided bouts, Bilal who has been fielded as flyweight despite being a bantamweight bronze medallist of the national junior championship overlooking flyweight winner Aneel Hussain, lost to Kyrgyzstan’s Saparbek Ulu Tilek 24-23.

Heavyweight Barkat looked like a novice against China’s Nijiati Yushang after visitor outscored him in the second round. Despite having a tremendous reach, Barkat punched thin air most of the time and hardly landed a blow on his rival.

Yushang cleverly scored vital points which saw referee signalling to stop the fight after the Chinese outscored his Pakistani opponent.

Meanwhile, PBF failed to attract majority of the Asian countries as only 15 teams are participating out of 46 boxing nations. According to organizing secretary Shakeel Durrani India and Chinese Taipei did not turn up as they were not issued visas till Monday morning before the draw.

“We were waiting for the authorities to issue visas to India and Chinese Taipei squads. We were forced to exclude the two teams from the championship as they failed to arrive because of visa delay,” the organizing secretary said.

Apart from Indian and Chinese Taipei, teams from Hong Kong and United Arab Emirates also opted to stay away from the championship despite confirmations.

Meanwhile, Pakistan team was without manager because of lethargic attitude of the Pakistan Boxing Federation, claimed manager-designate Habibullah Jaffri on Monday.

PBF had appointed Habib the manager of the national outfit but he did not show up, although the event started on Monday.

Habib said his absence was because of PBF’s unprofessional working as they did not inform him about his appointment neither verbally nor in writing.

“How can I come without any invitation as I was not even intimated about my appointment? I have nothing in official in writing or verbal directives,” Habib, the vice-president of Balochistan Boxing Association (BBA) said from Quetta.

However, he said he would be joining the squad on Tuesday after being verbally informed about the appointment by BBA secretary Haji Khudae Raheem.

“I have been told by the BBA secretary today that I have been appointed the manager and now I will be reaching Karachi tomorrow to join the team.”
